Birding in the Lancaster area

Woodlands

Some of the best Woodlands in this area are in the Silverdale/Arnside AONB, (e.g. Gaitbarrows) which is rich in invertibrates and supports many species including Woodcock.

Raptors abound. There are several pairs of breeding Buzzards, Sparrow Hawks and Kestrels are plentiful.

Passerines are well represented with good numbers of Thrushes - much higher numbers than the National Average. There are rare sightings of Hawfinches at Woodwell (Silverdale) and Sizergh Castle.

There is also excellent Woodland Habitat in the Lune Valley. Burton Wood being close to Lancaster. SD 540 661,OS Landranger Series 97. Up to date information from Lancaster and District Birdwatching Society
